The CSS Group insures around 1.7 million people and, with a premium volume of 7 billion Swiss francs, is one of Switzerland's leading health and property insurers. It is the market leader in basic insurance. The annual report provides an overview of the past financial year of the CSS Group.
United for over 125 years
The success story of CSS as a community of solidarity begins back in 1899 when 60 members of the Catholic Workers' Association joined forces to protect themselves from the real consequences of illness and accidents. This was a time when a fall or injury not only led to job loss, but also total financial ruin. To this day, the values of CSS are based on the principles of solidarity and fairness.
Recognition as a health insurance company
In 1914, the Federal Social Insurance Office officially registered the 'Christlichsoziale Krankenkasse der Schweiz' (Christian Social Health Insurance Association of Switzerland). In 1925, the name was changed to 'Christlichsoziale Kranken- und Unfallkasse der Schweiz (CKUS)' (Christian Social Health and Accident Health Insurance Association of Switzerland), which remained in use until the late 1980s when it was replaced by the name “CSS”.
Nationwide proximity to clients
In 1919, CSS relocated from St. Gallen to Lucerne. Initially based on Zürichstrasse, its headquarters are now located on the other side of the Reuss River in the Tribschen district. This means CSS has called Lucerne home for over 100 years. Today, around 1,500 people work for CSS in “Tribschen Town”.
Over 100 agencies and administrative offices
With the construction of the CSS Romandie Centre in 2013, CSS strengthened its presence in French-speaking Switzerland. In Lausanne-Vennes, the 500 jobs from the various administrative offices in French-speaking Switzerland were brought together under one roof. A relocation in 2025 from Breganzona to Lugano will see an expansion in Ticino. With all its administrative offices and over 100 agencies, the CSS Group is close to its clients throughout Switzerland.
