Swine flu or Mexican flu is a new variant of the A/H1N1 influenza virus, which first broke out in Mexico in 2009 before spreading to other countries and continents. This led to a worldwide pandemic in 2009/10. The name is not related to the animal disease “swine flu”, but refers to the fact that this variant of the virus probably originated among pigs in Mexico.
The information in the chapter about the annual seasonal flu/influenza also applies to swine flu. The symptoms and general measures are therefore the same. However, in a small number of cases, the disease can be considerably more severe than the seasonal flu.
