Linseed for constipation

Required material

1 - 2 tbsp linseed (flaxseed)

150 ml water

Application

The soluble fibre (mucilage) contained in the seeds acts as a bulking agent in the gut, thereby stimulating digestion and increasing the volume of the bowel contents. This only takes effect after 2 to 3 days.

To relieve constipation, you should take 1 to 2 tablespoons of linseed 2 to 3 times a day. It’s important to drink plenty of fluids after taking linseed (at least 1.5 litres per day).

Warning

  • As linseed can interfere with the absorption of medicine, it should only be taken 2 to 3 hours after medication.
  • You shouldn’t take linseed if you have had an intestinal obstruction in the past, suffer from gastrointestinal inflammation or have problems with the oesophagus or stomach (constriction, cancer).
  • As a precaution, pregnant women shouldn't take linseed as there are indications that linseed oil can lead to increased rates of miscarriage. Talk to your gynaecologist if you suffer from constipation during pregnancy.
