Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (CIBD) are disorders that involve recurrent or chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. The most common CIBD are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, which are described in their own separate chapters. Their symptoms are similar and they usually present as an intermittent, chronic inflammation of the bowel with pain and diarrhoea.
Irritable colon (or irritable bowel syndrome) is not a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
