Soothing a sore throat: these home remedies help
A sore throat is a characteristic side effect of a cold, i.e. an infection of the upper respiratory tract. What helps when you feel that familiar itchy burning sensation in your throat and it hurts to swallow?
What is a sore throat?
A sore throat is a very common complaint and mostly occurs when you have a cold. It usually disappears on its own after a few days. Drinking plenty of fluids can help you get better.
Typical symptoms
-
Pain in the throat / back of the mouth (in particular when speaking and swallowing)
-
Redness in the back of the mouth
- Fever
-
Headaches
-
Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
Cooling neck wrap
For a cooling effect, spread quark (approx. 200-500g) on a cloth, fold in the edges and place on the neck. Leave on for about 20 minutes and repeat several times a day if need be.
The cool quark acts as a decongestant, is anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and pleasantly cooling.
When to see a doctor?
Sore throats usually subside after 1 or 2 days and should disappear completely after about a week. If this isn't the case and high fever, shortness of breath or severe difficulty in swallowing are also experienced, it's advisable to see a doctor. Also when children complain of very sore throats.
